Frequently Asked Questions

  • Do I need a birth doula if I have a midwife?

Doulas and midwives perform separate jobs. A midwife is a trained medical professional who delivers babies, has monitoring equipment & performs procedures. Doulas offer information and physical/emotional support, but do not perform medical tasks. In the event that your birth relocates to the hospital unexpectedly, the doula will accompany you & is of tremendous emotional support in those times.

  • Is a doula needed for hospitals or home birth?

Doulas support all kinds of births regardless of location. Hospital births also benefit from the prenatal education, advocacy, logistical assistance & postpartum help that doulas offer. Especially in that high stress environment with one-size-fits-all-procedures, a doula makes a huge impact in supporting your decisions & advocating for your preferences.

  • Will my birth-partner be replaced by a doula?

Doulas do not replace the birth-partner. Your partner knows you and your needs better than anyone, they will be a huge part of your birth. Doulas have knowledge about pregnancy, birth, and postpartum that your partner may not have. We offer suggestions, calming presence & relief to your care-giver during the long hours of childbirth. We love to work with partners to create a care-team for your best experience.

  • Can I use my insurance for payment?

The KDC does not negotiate with insurance companies for payment. However doulas are increasingly common & many insurance providers have approved reimbursement. We will provide you with the necessary documents for your records.

  • What is the difference between death doulas & hospice care?

Hospice nurses are medically trained professionals. Death doulas help fill in the gaps for families that may or may not be recieving hospice care. Doulas support families who need assistance in caring for their sick or elderly.  These families have questions, complex emotions, domestic needs & must be relieved of caregiving to take their own personal time.

  • What else does the K.D.C. provide?

We offer educational courses in person and digitally. Please take a look at our 'Classes' section of the website to see our current offerings. We provide childbirth education, fitness & opportunities to practice mindfulness. More classes & private parties are available, please reach out to us.
